Despite this, the rest of the hospital seems fine, my only dissatisfaction is with the Emergency Room and that ER doctor who was far too busy to take a proper look at a patient. Having encountered that very doctor before, my mother commented, "If I had known he was on duty today, I wouldn't have even bothered coming. He's rushed through every examination I've seen him do. Both for myself, and my boyfriend. So if he doesn't see a problem with my swollen gland, too bad. I feel like I didn't see an actual medical professional."
I was really disappointed in this experience, and now understand why many locals had warned me against the ER here. People call it a "Band-aid Station" and I'm inclined to believe it after that. Also, they demand copay upfront, which I've never seen before. Despite being a medicaid patient, my mother was expected to fork over money before being seen. I've lived in four states and various cities over the years, and am no stranger to emergency rooms, and not once have I had a copay demanded of me before being let in.
Additionally, my husband had a seizure today and hesitantly went over to the Salem Township ER, but ended up leaving without being seen, as we were told that the copay for the ER would be "well over $75" since they couldn't find our insurance in the computer system.
I took my mother to the ER at Salem Township Hospital after her salivary gland swelled up to twice its normal size in a matter of hours. After a short wait, she was examined by a male physician in one of the exam rooms. After glancing at her, he declared that he didn't see any swelling. After telling him repeatedly that the pain was very severe, and that it was located in the salivary gland, he ignored her and insisted on checking her teeth and tongue. After again insisting that the pain and swelling (which was very visible to me) was in the salivary gland he poked her throat and jaw roughly, which she expressed was painful. He declared that nothing was wrong, and there was no swelling, and told us that she would be discharged shortly. We waited for the nurse to bring us the discharge paperwork, which took far longer than the doctor's examination. I was under the impression that the doctor was terribly busy by his behavior, but I know that to not be the case, as the other examination rooms were empty, and he and the nurses were sitting around fiddling their thumbs when she was finally discharged.
